I think it's been interesting living here as a teacher since I am most often hearing about Romania from the context of young university students. I think for many of them, these lessons and achievements despite difficult setbacks are perceived differently than those older might see them, especially those who lived through these changes. Many students don't perceive viable ways to earn a good salary here in Romania depite their hard work in university and they are frustrated at the contrast between Romania and other parts of the EU (especially Western). I sense a lot of disenchantment from the youth, so I wonder if there are better ways to harness their energy and hopes. Especially tying it with the older generation's wisdom and greater vision to make this country grow in ways that support all Romanians wanting to keep calling here home.
These are of course impressions from a non-Romanian but I do have many candid conversations with my students regularly.
I appreciate seeing these perspectives of yours! 🌹
I can imagine this from the younger people. On the one hand, I feel we as a nation have not fully integrated our history and we should talk more about what happened before the revolution and after; this would give us all a longer term perspective. On the other hand, I wish the country could offer more to them or that they could be exposed to more entrepreneurial contexts. From the experience of those living in Western Europe I know it's not as rosy as it might seem from afar.
Keep listening and talking to them, these are already things I wish more educators would do and that I know help. 🙏
Inspiring reflections!
What’s your impression of Romania from the experience you had so far in relation to any of the points in the post?
